Children’s Advocacy Centers of Georgia (CACGA) is pleased to welcome Elizabeth Smart to our annual World Day for the Prevention of Child Abuse Conference on Nov. 19, 2012.

Her traumatizing but triumphant story is an example to all of not only why we should protect children, but also of how amazing the human spirit is. Smart survived nine months of abuse after being abducted at 14 from her Utah home on the night of June 5, 2002.

Her kidnappers Brian Mitchell and Wanda Barzee were eventually indicted for the crimes against Smart. Mitchell is serving a life sentence, and Barzee is serving 15 years.

Today the 25-year-old Smart is recently married and a graduate of Brigham Young University. She travels the world talking of her harrowing tale of torture and survival. Her speeches not only tell her story, but also they highlight how to overcome extreme adversity and look to the future.
