Driver Charged in Jay Ingram's Death

The 50-year-old from Doraville faces a misdemeanor count of vehicular homicide.

The Doraville driver who police say fatally struck Coach Jay Ingram has been charged in his death.

William Benton, 50, is charged with second-degree vehicular homicide and failure to maintain a lane, Cobb County police spokesman Sgt. Dana Pierce announced.

Second-degree vehicular homicide is a misdemeanor in Georgia, punishable by a maximum of one year in jail and a fine of up to $1 million, according to the Law Office of J. Lee Webb.

Benton was given copies of the citations against him and released, Pierce said.

Benton drove the red 2012 Chevrolet Traverse that hit Ingram while he was jogging on North Booth Road near Junction Drive just after 5 a.m. Jan. 26, police have said.

Ingram, 32, a beloved coach and teacher at Kennesaw Charter Science and Math Academy, died the next day at WellStar Kennestone Hospital.

More than 1,500 people attended the memorial for Ingram.

The investigation continues. Police ask anyone with information about that morning to call 770-499-3987.
