Infant Dies After Being Left in Car

Wednesday, a 5-month-old was pronounced dead after being left in a vehicle in the parking lot of a Kennesaw day care center for more than five hours.

Kennesaw Police are investigating the death of a 5-month-old infant who was left inside a car for over five hours Wednesday.

Police were dispatched to , located at 1730 Tuscan Heights Blvd. near the intersection of Cobb Parkway and Old Highway 41, shortly before 6 p.m., said Officer Scott Luther of the .

The child had been in the care of a family member who was not the child's mother, said Luther. The family member arrived to work at the Kennesaw day care center at about noon but apparently forgot about the infant, who was asleep, said Luther.

"Apparently, she arrived for work down at the day care and was taking stuff in and out of the car and was distracted," said Luther. "It was a tragic accident."

The child was left in the car for over five hours, he said. The baby was found unresponsive inside the car and after several attempts to revive her, she was pronounced dead.

Temperatures Wednesday reached into the high 80s.

As of Thursday, no charges had been filed in connection with the child's death, which remains under investigation.

Names of those involved are currently being withheld due to the sensitive nature of the incident.
