Kennesaw Historical Society Hosts Western Show

Saturday, locals gathered at the Southern Museum for the free concert.

Fans of Western music gathered Saturday at the to reminisce to the tunes of Roy Rogers, Gene Autry and other Western favorites.

About 50 people gathered to hear Kennesaw resident Robert Jones and his seven-piece band share favorites from popular TV shows from the 50s and 60s and radio favorites. The free concert was sponsored by the Kennesaw Historical Society.

Marietta residents Vi and Ron Poteete brought their granddaughter to listen to the Western band.

“We’re country/western fans and liked Roy Rogers and Gene Autry,” said Ron Poteete. “I even had a Roy Rogers lunchbox when I was a kid.”

Band leader Robert Jones said that Western swing music was a “forgotten art form” and said he hoped the concert would bring back memories of popular TV shows like “Rawhide” and Roy Rogers and Dale Evans.

Aided by a fiddle, guitar, keyboard and bass, the singers combined for favorites like “Ghost Riders in the Sky,” and the theme from “Rawhide.”  The toe-tapping music was a crowd-pleaser for all ages – from senior citizens to youngsters.

Jones is president of the Kennesaw Historical Society and programs and education chairman of the Kennesaw Museum Foundation.
