Mathews: City Positioned for Growth

Kennesaw Mayor Mark Mathews told town hall attendees that the city is positioned well as the economy improves.

About 50 residents came out to Ben Robertson Community Center Wednesday for a town-hall meeting with Mayor Mark Mathews. The presentation was similar to his State of the City address given recently to the Kennesaw Business Association.

"We haven't been sitting still," Mathews said. "We have been working to make sure Kennesaw is positioned out front as the economy turns around, and now we're seeing the fruits of our labor."

Some of those "fruits" include more jobs and more housing coming to the city, said Mathews, who also introduced several city council members and staffers who were in attendance.

"When people hear about Kennesaw now, it's a lot different," said Mathews. "We have a fantastic reputation in metro-Atlanta and within the county, and that's due, in large part, to a great, hard-working staff."

One of those staffers, city stormwater manager Jon Whitmer, made a presentation on Kennesaw's aging stormwater system. He defined stormwater as the runoff water from rain or snow melting, which then "runs off" across land.

That water is collected in inlets, pipes, culverts, ditches, and 200 ponds across the city, said Whitmer. "Why worry about it?" he asked. The answer was the damage due to the flooding of 2009, sink holes, increasing maintenance costs, erosion, and water quality.

Kennesaw has 57 miles of aging pipes that will need to be replaced in the next 15 years, said Whitmer, at a cost of about $50 million. "If we take no action, we have fines by the EPA, more flooding issues, but, more importantly, we need to take care of the environment for our kids."

Mathews echoed Whitmer's concerns. "We have to address this subject and will have more meetings about stormwater in the next few months," said Mathews. "This will impact both residential and commercial areas. Get this on your radar."

Maybe so some 40 years ago but becoming like our larger city to the South everyday. Nothing was wrong with our little town 40 odd years ago. Change is not always good. Still I love my town our town, but miss the times when I knew everyone in the city and they would always say hey how you doing when you passed by. Those days are gone but if I see you , you most likely will still hear from me with the greeting "Hey how are you doing" most will not reply but that is them and not me.

Have we finish with the Road yet? We need to finish one job before we start another local project. We have had very little growth in population and jobs for the area. We do not want to increase taxes in this economy yet. Homeowners have just gone through 2 rate increases with "no-say" in either for water and power as we tried to conserve both. Still Stings a bit paying more for less.

Mr. Green: It's not always feasible to wait for one project to finish before another begins. Often a city growing has numerous (usually more than three-four) projects going on at a time due to those involved in the project itself. I would hate to know that those of us on one side of Cobb Parkway had to wait until something on the other side of Cobb Parkway was completed before we could get improvements started.

Debra what are they doing on the West Side of Cobb Pkwy aka the 4 Lane or Hwy 41? We have a big hole in the ground at Kennesaw Due West with a trailer bank , understand the time was wrong when it started but still that is all we have on the West Side of our beloved 4 Lane Hwy. Very little has ever been done on the West Side . Kennesaw is more then just Main Street aka Old 41 or 293, Cherokee Street or Jiles Road. Kennesaw is the whole town from the Acworth line to Barrett Pkwy from the West Side of Cobb Pkwy (aka 4 Lane) to I-75 . I love my town our town just wish our city showed the love to the whole town.

Debra it appears to me that we just about have our hands full now. Especially, since we have the biggest hole in middle of Cobb Parkway and as they complain we can't afford a train connecting us to MARTA. Big or Small towns, we always have an excuse to keep doing the wrong things first and what should be done...last if at all.
