Today is Catholic Day at the Capitol, and Kennesaw's St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church has much to celebrate.

Seventh and 8th graders at the church's school took home first place in the State of Georgia FIRST LEGO League Robotics Tournament, said church spokeswoman Kim Graff.

The team of 10 students was one of 48 Georgia teams to compete at the state level in the robotics program for 9 to 14-year-olds. The event was held at Georgia Tech on Jan. 28.

On the same day, seven of St. Catherine’s students won medals at the Cobb-Paulding Regional Science and Engineering Fair, Graff said. Middle school science teacher and science fair coach Alice Garrity received the STEM Educator Award from Southern Polytechnic State University at the competition.

The church's school, which opened in 2002 with just 70 students, now serves 430 children in Kindergarten through 8th grade.

The school will celebrate its 10th anniversary with a Gala Auction on March 10 at the Cobb Galleria Centre benefiting the Herbert Hall renovation project. The event will include a gourmet dinner, silent and live auctions, and dancing.
