A roundup of high school sports schedules and results
It was a fight to the finish in Friday's game between the North Cobb Christian Eagles and the St. Francis Knights. Every time the Knights scored, the Eagles eventually came back and tied the game. The difference in the game came in the second overtime. Both teams missed the extra point in the first OT after scoring touchdowns. But when the North Cobb Christian offense faltered in the second OT, coaches opted for a field goal, putting their hopes on the defense to stop St. Francis short of the goal line. That hope was lost when St. Francis quarterback Joey Roche dove just enough to get the …
North Cobb Christian (1-0) at Mount Paran (1-0)—Mount Paran opens its Region 6-A schedule against North Cobb Christian, with each team looking to get a leg up in the early standings. North Cobb Christian crushed Mount Zion (Carrollton) 42-6 last week, while Mount Paran opened its season with a 27-23 win over Pace Academy. Mount Paran won this Eagle Bowl 54-6 a year ago. Kennesaw Mountain (0-1) at Pope (1-0)—Kennesaw Mountain has gone 1-9 in each of the past two seasons (not including a forfeit win against Etowah in 2009), which could mean easy pickings for the Pope Greyhounds and quarterback …
The toughest opponent for North Cobb Christian School's football home opener today was the 97-degree heat. With the game scheduled for 5 p.m. against Mount Zion High School from Carrollton, both Eagle teams baked under the late-afternoon sun. The NCCS Eagles won big, taking the game 42-6. North Cobb Christian had plenty of offense during the first half, thanks to senior Corey Harris (No. 2), who plays both wide receiver and running back. Harris was instrumental in last year's season and picked up where he left off today. "This year we came in with more intensity," said Harris, who scored …
The 2011 football season is finally here. There have been a few games throughout the area, but tonight is the night where most of the football teams kick off. Here's what's on the slate for schools in the Kennesaw Patch: Kennesaw Mountain (0-0) at Allatoona (0-0)—A young program that appears to be on the rise hosts another young program that has yet to find its footing. Allatoona made the playoffs in just its second full season of football a season ago, while Kennesaw Mountain stumbled to a 1-9 record and is still looking for its first state playoff appearance in 11 seasons. Allatoona won …
As a freshman, Chris Sferra of Kennesaw is ready to start his fourth football season at North Cobb Christian School today at 5 p.m. The team hosts Mount Zion-Carroll at home, and the big offensive tackle can't wait. This is the freshman's fourth year of football after playing three years on the NCCS middle school team. "I love the pure drive of it," Chris said when asked why he loves the sport. "It makes you strong and teaches you things about life—it's a man's sport." The son of John and Dacia Sferra of Kennesaw, Chris has had to juggle a lot in his life lately. His father has battled …

The high school baseball season has been going on for over 10 weeks now, but for most teams it ends Friday. Harrison will be hosting the game of the day in Kennesaw Patch. The Hoyas will be looking to earn a spot in next week's state tournament, but it won't be easy, they're going to have to knock off first place Hillgrove to do it. If Harrison – currently tied for third in Region 4-AAAAA with a 8-5 record – can get past the region-leading Hawks on Friday at home, then the Hoyas – pending tiebreakers – will earn a three or four seed heading in to postseason play. However, should Harrison slip…
