About this column:

A Kennesaw Mountain High School grad shares her advice from college.
It never fails. Every Sunday night around 7 or 8 p.m., I ask myself where the weekend went. Then I usually think to myself, if I were the President of the United States, I would make every weekend a three-day weekend. Frankly, two days never seem to be enough. Monday morning always seems to come no matter how much I fight it, and because none of the potential 2012 presidential candidates has shortening the work week on their agendas, I have had to come up with ways to make the most out of my weekend. Don’t save everything for the weekend. This is also called procrastinating. That is my go-to …
Going back to college for your second year is an experience all on its own. Believe it or not, you will have confidence that you did not have before. Campus will seem a little smaller and you won’t be completely lost at every turn. You may hear the expression "sophomore slump" thrown around a lot, especially when there is talk of an artist whose second album does not meet the expectations or standards of their debut release. This can happen to college students who have had successful during their freshman year. I know after my first few months of college, I thought to myself, “Well, this isn’…
I’ve been in school for a long time and I still get nervous on the first day. I always lay awake in bed the night before unable to fall asleep and feeling a mixture of anxiousness and excitement. I have passed physically setting out my outfit that I’m going to wear the next day, but I still spend a decent amount of time planning it out in my head. I approach the beginning of a new school year the same way I approach the beginning of new calendar year. I take the time to reflect on all the things that happened this past year and all the exciting things to look forward to this year. If it’s …
During the school year, you get to go where you want, when you want, with whoever you want. No one is there to ask you any questions. You know–those questions Mom and Dad always want to know. Where are you going? Who are you going with? How long are you going to be there? But over the summer, if you find yourself back home, you are suddenly restricted to be out during times your parents feel is acceptable. Plus, you may have to remember to call and check-in. I’m not saying you should go gallivanting around strange places with random people until all odd hours of the morning, but having the …
Congratulations if you are finishing your first year of college. With moving away from home, and the temptations of your new-found freedom, it was no easy feat. These are just some things to think about as the year comes to a close. I know that my grades could have been better, but I say that each and every semester. I joined a new organization in the past semester, and I plan on becoming a more active member next semester. However your year turned out, you have the power to make the rest of your college experience anything you want it to be. Academics: Did you get the grades you wanted? Why …
School is out. Now it’s time to get those extra hours at your summer job. You should always have a little money in your savings account, but it would be especially nice to have a decent sized chunk of change to start off the new semester. You can still have fun this summer without breaking the bank. Make a budget. Allot yourself a certain amount of spending money a week. Try not to go over that amount. This way you should be able to see the unnecessary things you spend money on like the extra cup of coffee or candy bar you have a few times a week. Those little expenditures will add up. Plan …
We're almost to the end. It's the final stretch. I can almost smell the chlorine from the pool and feel the humidity in the air. What would be a better way to go out with a bang than by doing awesome on final exams? Trick question. There isn't. Think ahead. Figure out when all your finals are early on and plan accordingly. It is common sense, but you will want to give priority study times to the finals you have earlier in the week. Find out which of your exams are comprehensive. Comprehensive exams require you to recall material from the beginning of the semester, so you will want to start …
You know that saying, “What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.” Well, the same is true for Spring Break…except in 2011, when almost everyone has a camera phone with Internet access. Incriminating photos and video can be taken and sent to hundreds of followers and friends in a matter of seconds. Once it's on the Internet, it's out there. Scary, right? I love social media just as much as the next millennial. You can find me on Facebook, Twitter and the like, but it is important to be careful what you are posting, and tweeting. We all know how college students are notorious for behaving as classy…
