Incentives Offered to Kennesaw Skatepark Donors

About $300,000 is needed to complete the second phase of the skatepark at Swift-Cantrell Park.

Earlier this year, Kennesaw reached a milestone in its years-long quest to build a state-of-the-art skatepark when area leaders and skateboarding enthusiasts gathered at Swift-Cantrell Park to break ground on the first phase of the 40,000-square-foot park.

Now supporters have created an incentive program to encourage online donations for the second phase of that park. One of the prizes is a trip to California.

Construction of the skatepark will cost $1.8-million. So far, Kennesaw has $1.4 million.

"Thanks to a great group of early supporters, local businesses, a special tax, city contributions, and Rob Dyrdek’s contribution, there are enough funds to finish Phase One of the skatepark including 160 parking spaces, a new restroom, lights, and the ($740,827) Street League Plaza," according to a message on the fundourcommunity.com online donation page.

Because work will begin only on those portions of the project that have full funding in place, the start of second phase of the skatepark will depend on the availability of funds.

None of the money will come from the city's general fund. Kennesaw will seek donations to close the funding gap.

"We now need about $300,000 to do Phase Two before Phase One is done this summer," according to a message on the fundourcommunity.com online donation page. "This way, we save money by not interrupting the construction."

During the second phase, a skatepark flow course, skate pool and skate bowl perimeter concrete will be constructed at a cost of $309,024. Landscaping, additional parking and restroom, lighting, and site furnishings will total $740,742.
