Pirate Day Camp Among Treasures at Kennesaw Parks and Rec Department

The department is celebrating National Parks and Recreation Month in July.

Pirates invaded Kennesaw on Friday. They paraded around the with swords, hooks and treasure maps.

The pirate-themed day camp was just one of the many programs offered by the Kennesaw Parks and Recreation Department–a department that plans activities for adults and children. July is National Parks and Recreation Month, and Kennesaw’s crew of workers is busy keeping residents fit and active.

“Our purpose is to provide recreational opportunities–both passive and active–to our citizens,” said David Pies, recreation division manager for the city of Kennesaw. He added that over 100 activities have been planned this summer to showcase the city’s various facilities, including and and the Ben Robertson Center.

Some 4,500 citizens participated in classes and programs from September 2010 to May 2011, said Pies, including gymnastics, dance, sports and enrichment programs. About 80 kids participated this week in the pirate-themed day camp and dressed as pirates searching for treasure. Even “big kids” got into the act, as Parks and Rec staffers dressed the part–including Pies.

Pirates “raided” the new pottery studio at the Ben Robertson Center and found Patty Caldwell-Turner teaching a fine arts camp.

“I really enjoy just having 10 kids and teaching them clay and other mediums,” said Caldwell-Turner.

Upcoming events include the Kennesaw Youth Sports Spectacular July 30 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Adams Park with free hotdogs and refreshments. Kids can check out the many youth sports organizations in Kennesaw and test their skills.

The Program Palooza will be held August 13 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Ben Robertson Community Center. This free family-friendly event will showcase the many programs offered by the Kennesaw Parks and Recreation Department. Radio Disney will be on hand, along with free food, crafts and inflatables.

Adult kickball leagues, zumba classes, outdoor concerts and movies, parades and camps are all in a summer’s worth of work for this busy department.

“We just want to get people up and moving,” said Pies.
