Run for Office; Lady Hoyas Run to Title

Here's what you should know to start Aug. 29 in Kennesaw.

1. While the Northeast is and dealing with one of the wettest months on record, Cobb and other counties in North Georgia face a high risk of wildfires this afternoon and evening because it’s so dry and the humidity will be so low, the National Weather Service says. We’re also under a Code Orange smog alert. It will be a sunny day with little wind and a high around 93. Overnight, the low will be about 64, and the wind will gust up to 15 mph.

2. for Kennesaw-area schools Friday night, but that wasn’t the only sport over the weekend. softball team had a busy weekend in the Buccaneer Bash (see the photos from games against and ). In cross country, girls won the Walton/Peachtree Ridge Stage Races in Duluth, led by Kaylee Isaacs and Alex Maedar, while the boys finished 12th of 16. Harrison’s softball team plays host to Lassiter at 7 p.m. today.

3. If you have a freshman or sophomore at Harrison, make sure he or she is looking good on the way out the door this morning because it’s school-picture day. The juniors and seniors get their photos Tuesday.

4. Rep. (R-Marietta) will hold a town-hall meeting in Kennesaw at the on Thursday from noon to 1:30 p.m., and you can get a preview of that event during the congressman’s town hall in Cartersville today at noon. Kennesaw Patch plans to have live coverage of both meetings.

5. The qualifying period for the Nov. 8 municipal elections opens today. If you want to run for mayor or City Council Post 1 or 2, you must sign up at between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. today, Tuesday or Wednesday. Note that the office is closed from noon to 1 p.m. The entry fee is $576 for mayor and $360 for the council seats. You must be 21 years old, a registered voter and a city resident for the 12 months leading to the election date.
