The Old Guard Exhibit Opening, Western Show at Southern Museum

Here are five things you should know before you leave the house today.

1. According to the National Weather Service, today will be partly sunny with a high near 92 and a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Tonight will be partly cloudy with a low around 72 and a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms.

2. The is hosting the formal opening of The Old Guard of the Gate City Guard exhibit today from 1 to 3 p.m. The original Gate City Guard was one of the first military units to respond to the call for arms in defense of Georgia during the Civil War.

Mayor Mark Mathews, City Council Members and Old Guard members will be in attendance for the exhibit opening, the first of many events at the museum that will commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. There will be refreshments, speeches and photo opportunities with Old Guard members in uniform. The exhibit is open until October 16.

3. Also at the Southern Museum today, the Kennesaw Historical Society is sponsoring a Western Music Show at 2 p.m. in the theater. The concert will include favorites from Roy Rogers, The Sons of the Pioneers, Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys, Gene Autry and more. Admission is free, and parking is available at the rear of the museum.

4. In case you missed it, AMC Barrett Commons 24 in Kennesaw will be one of 10 theaters nationwide next Friday to premiere "The Undefeated," a documentary film about Sarah Palin. .

5. Did You Know? On this day in history in 1918, an inbound local train collided with an outbound express train in Nashville, killing 101 people and making it the deadliest rail accident in U.S. history.
