Turkey Cooking Tips, Recipes, Toys

Here are five things you should know before you leave the house today.

1. Thanksgiving is right around the corner and many families will gather to feast on a traditional turkey dinner. The UGA/Cobb County Cooperative Extension staff has posted a link on its website, cobbextension.com, that includes a guide to preparing a safe holiday turkey. Click on "Family and Consumer Sciences," then "News and Events" for information ranging from buying your holiday turkey to safely thawing, cleaning, cooking, and storing leftovers.

Don't forget to take a look at our delicious recipes for and to go with that turkey. Check out the Patch for more cooking inspiration.

2. If you'll be shopping for that bird today, the National Weather Service is calling for unseasonably warm weather, with a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Look for mostly cloudy skies, with a high near 74.

3. While you're out Christmas shopping this weekend, grab a gift for a less fortunate child in our community. Then drop it by the Bank of North Georgia branch in Kennesaw at 555 Chastain Drive between Nov. 25 and Dec. 16. Bank customers and local residents can participate in the annual Holiday Toy Drive by bringing new, unwrapped toys for boys and girls to the branch. The Chastain branch will donate all toys received to Cobb Family Resources.

4. Check back later today with Kennesaw Patch to read about last night's meeting.

5. Fun Thanksgiving Fact: Sarah Josepha Hale, an American magazine editor, persuaded Abraham Lincoln to declare Thanksgiving a national holiday. She is also the author of the popular nursery rhyme, "Mary Had a Little Lamb."
