Aluminum Company Bringing 150 Jobs

Novelis plans to open its Kennesaw facility in a leased building on Vaughn Road in summer 2012.

Kennesaw will gain approximately 150 jobs from an aluminum research-and-development facility expected to open in the summer of 2012.

Buckhead-based Novelis announced Monday that it will open the R&D center in a leased, 160,000-square-foot building at 1950 Vaughn Road, the Marietta Daily Journal reported.

Novelis calls itself “the world’s largest producer of rolled aluminum and the global leader in beverage can recycling.” It is a subsidiary of an Indian company, Hindalco Industries.

Last year Novelis moved its headquarters to Buckhead from Ohio. In looking for a site for the new facility, which will develop aluminum products and improvements in manufacturing processes, the company looked at locations around metro Atlanta and outside Georgia, the Atlanta Business Chronicle reported.

“We selected this location for its proximity to our global headquarters, accessibility to customers from all parts of the world, and the ability to recruit talent to the area,” Novelis CEO Philip Martens said in a statement.

Also playing a part in the decision were tax incentives from Georgia and Cobb County.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that Novelis could receive $1.9 million in job tax credits over five years from the state. Cobb Economic Development Director Michael Hughes said the county is giving Novelis $1.1 million in personal-property-tax abatements, the MDJ reported.

Novelis spokesman Charles Belbin told the AJC that the 150 good-paying jobs in Kennesaw will go to scientists and technologists, some of whom will move from a Novelis facility in Canada. While Belbin wouldn’t put a salary range on those positions, Hughes told the MDJ they will pay $75,000 to $95,000.

Renovating and equipping the Vaughn Road building will cost about $25 million, the Business Chronicle said, citing Belbin.

The interior work will begin this summer, 11 Alive News reported, with the installation of equipment starting early in 2012. Some of that equipment will come from the same Ontario site from which employees will transfer, the MDJ said.
