Target, the nation's second-largest discount retailer, said Tuesday an unidentified number of gift cards sold over the holidays were not properly activated, reported USA Today.

The chain said the number of cards affected was less than 0.1% of the total sold, reported the Associated Press.

The company issued an apology Tuesday and promised to honor the defective cards without a receipt.

"We are aware that some Target gift cards were not fully activated and apologize for the inconvenience," company spokeswoman Molly Snyder said in a statement emailed to The Associated Press.

The gift card snafu comes less than two weeks after Target announced it was hit with a massive data security breach that affected about 40 million debit and credit card holders who shopped at its stores between Nov. 27 and Dec. 15.

Target is doing 'damage control' and are now putting out the dud cards at 0.1% rather than the number of 40,000 in the original report. Nationwide mistakes were made at the registers where the incorrect UPC number was entered and all those cards are now no good. Any 'gift card' is a very bad idea, but if you gave or got a Target gift card then you may well have gotten or given one that was worthless. The screw up is probably a lot bigger than what was reported. Only Target will ever know the exact numbers and they have no incentive to give out the higher numbers.
