Insurance Agent Gives Tips After Storms

State Farm agent Ryan Young says be careful in calling your insurance company.

Kennesaw fared pretty well yesterday as several storms packing high winds went around the city, damaging areas of Powder Springs and Cherokee County. said no damage or injuries were reported in the city -- even around , where there was a report of tornadic activity that was not confirmed.

State Farm Insurance agent Ryan Young, located at 3903 Jiles Road in Kennesaw, has some advice for anyone dealing with storm damage today or in the future:

1. Young said that, if customers call their homeowners insurance company and say they have damage and request an adjuster, that counts as a claim regardless of the outcome. "Even if no money is paid out, that counts as a claim against your record," said Young. "Consumers need to be very cautious."

2. Get multiple quotes. Young said an insurance company may have a preferred provider, but it doesn't hurt to get multiple quotes from contractors. "You can discuss with your insurance company  whether they have a preferred provider or not," said Young. "That does make things easier because then the insurance company just pays the contractor directly and you don't have to handle any payments."

3. Young said most insurance policies state that the homeowner is responsible "to limit further damage." That means that, if a tree falls on your home's roof, you need to get someone to cover that roof and protect the home's contents in addition to getting the tree off the roof, he said. "Getting the roof covered is also counted in the overall claim," said Young.

Yesterday's round of storms haven't resulted in any calls or claims for Young's business, he said. "It has been pretty quiet this time," said Young. "We dodged a bullet this time."
