Movie Night, Museum, Pumpkins

Here are 5 things you need to know in Kennesaw for Sept. 29.

1. A big Canadian cold front is headed our way this weekend. But before it gets here, the National Weather Service says today will be sunny, with a high near 83. Tonight will be partly cloudy, with a low around 57.

2. Don't forget to come out this crisp, fall weekend to enjoy the movie "Yogi Bear" at on a giant inflatable screen on Saturday.  The film is rated PG and will begin at dark. Parking is available at Swift-Cantrell Park. Additional parking is available at Kennesaw Elementary School, 3155 Jiles Road and Cobb Vineyard Church, 3206 Old 41 Highway.

3. The Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History will be host to the Georgia Military Vehicle Preservation Association’s Fall Rally on Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This event will feature vehicle shows and displays, a military vehicle parts and supplies swap meet, military collectible traders, and much more. The Rally wil be held on the depot lawn across from the Museum.  The GAMVPA is the affiliated chapter of the Military Vehicle Preservation Association.

4. Want to use your imagination and show off your pumpkin carving skills? Local businesses, schools, community groups and families are invited to create unique, colorful and playful pumpkin scenes near the for public viewing during "The Haunted Museum - Villains in History" event on October 21-22. The entry fee is $10 per decorating team (non-refundable). Space is limited and entries will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Entries should reflect the spirit of the theme "Things That Go Bump in the Night," (such as zombies, ghosts and goblins, Hollywood monsters, animals and mythical creatures). Pumpkin scenes will be judged and prizes will be awarded in several creative categories. For contest entries and more information, visit www.kennesaw-ga.gov.

5. Fun fact: Originally called Big Shanty, reflecting its early history as a construction camp for Irish railroad workers, our city changed its name to Kennesaw after the Civil War to commemorate the nearby battle of Kennesaw Mountain.
