Parks Day, Fair Begins, Military Rally

Here are 5 things you need to know in Kennesaw for Sept. 22.

On Saturday, more than 180,000 volunteers around the nation, including volunteers at , are expected to visit their favorite parks, beaches, wildlife preserves, or forests and chip in to help improve these treasured places. They’ll be taking part in National Public Lands Day (NPLD), the largest, single-day volunteer effort for public lands in the United States. The Kennesaw Mountain Trail Club will lead the work day at Kennesaw Mountain from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., with projects that include removal of invasive plants and general pruning at picnic areas; rebuilding of landscaping in front of the Visitor's Center; widening and stump removal for trail near Dallas Highway; and regrading of the trail to the Illinois Monument. For the second year, The Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History in Kennesaw will be host to the Georgia Military Vehicle Preservation Association’s Fall Rally on Friday, Sept. 30 and Saturday, Oct. 1, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This event will feature vehicle shows and displays, a military vehicle parts and supplies swap meet, military collectible traders, and much more. The Rally wil be held on the depot lawn across from the Museum.  The GAMVPA is the affiliated chapter of the Military Vehicle Preservation Association.

5. Did you know? The Southern Museum also houses a display about Glover Machine Works, a restored early 20th century belt-driven locomotive assembly line. The Jolley Education Center also offers numerous hands-on and interactive exhibits that are fun for the entire family.
