Qualifiers, Colors, Birds

Here's what you need to know in Kennesaw for Sept. 2.

1. The long Labor Day weekend gets off to a good start today weatherwise. The National Weather Service calls for sunny skies with a high near 93. Tonight will be partly cloudy with a low around 66 -- great for high school football games. Unfortunately for our drought situation, there's no rain in sight.

2. Qualifying ended at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday for the general election on Nov. 8. The city has the mayor’s office and two council seats up for grabs -- Post 1 and Post 2. Candidates who have filed are: and challenger and former two-term mayor Leonard Church; incumbent council member and challenger Kimmarie Seabrook Gollabon, Post 1; and incumbent and Jimmy Dickens, Post 2.

3. Don’t forget to wear your colors today – it’s National College Colors Day.  Kennesaw Mayor Mark Mathews asks city residents to support the state’s third-largest university by wearing gold and black. The day is a national event in its sixth year.

4. hosts an adult class called Backyard Birding at 10 a.m. today.  On the 1st and 3rd Friday of every month, participants can join Pat Pepper on the back porch of the Hiram Butler house for bird watching.  This class is designed for anyone who enjoys watching birds and would like to learn more about these fascinating creatures: their names, habitats, and food preferences. All programs are $15 unless otherwise noted. This includes admission to the gardens. Registration is recommended online at smithgilbertgardens.com or by calling 770-919-0248.

5. Labor Day trivia: Traditionally, it has been unacceptable to wear white after Labor Day, though today’s fashion rules seem to be tired of this tradition. Do you still follow the rule?
