Smith-Gilbert Gardens Seeks Docents

Beginning Wednesday, Aug. 14, Smith-Gilbert Gardens staff will be offering a docent training course designed to prepare individuals to lead tours and assist with programs for children kindergarten through fourth grade.

Classes will be conducted at the Gardens, 2382 Pine Mountain Road, from 10 a.m. to noon for five weeks.

Docents will learn about the variety of plants, flowers and sculptures in the 16-acre Gardens as well as the story of the property and the historic Hiram Butler House.

Docents will also become familiar with techniques for presenting educational programs to 5-10 year olds.

“If you are a retired teacher or just love little people, this an excellent opportunity to spend quality time with bright-eyed children hungry for information,” said Susan Schroeder, Director of Operations. “There is great reward in educating a child and opening their eyes to the wonder and excitement only found in nature."

Docents will be required to become Gardens members.
