Tests, Busy Bees, 5K and Fun Run

Here's 5 things to know in Kennesaw for August 18.

1. This week brought some refreshing changes in our weather, but this weekend we get back into the 90s. The National Weather Service says today will be partly sunny, with a high near 90 and a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Tonight's low will be around 66.

2. The Cobb County School District's recently-graduated Class of 2011 has posted the system's sixth consecutive increase on ACT composite scores. Cobb students scored an average of 22.4 (out of a possible 36), improving over the 2010 composite score of 22.2 and again outperforming the national average of 21.1 and the state average of 20.6. Some 30 percent of 2005 seniors took the test, compared to 41 percent of 2011 seniors. In 2005, just 1,823 seniors took the ACT, compared to 3,249 in 2011. Kennesaw high schools performing well included and .

3. The will host a class entitled, "Winterizing your Beehive" at 10 a.m. Saturday. Beekeepers will demonstrate how to open hives, evaluate the health of the bees and discuss methods for fall feeding. Feeding strategies will include incorporation of Kentucky Bourbon into the Italian bee diet. The class fee is $25.

4. The 2nd Annual Music on the Mountain 5k and 1 mile Fun Run will be held Saturday at beginning at 6 p.m. Proceeds from the event benefit the Kennesaw Mountain Marching Band - and they will be performing at various locations around the course.  Race-day registration is $25 for the 5k and $18 for the Fun Run.

5. Fun fact: A prolific and imaginative writer, Edgar Rice Burroughs wrote 26 "Tarzan" books without ever visiting Africa.
