Town Hall Today, Labor Day, Elections

Here are 5 things to know in Kennesaw for Sept. 1

1. Is it really September already?  Maybe we'll feel a chill in the air, start seeing fall festivals at schools and candy corn in the stores.  For the first day of the ninth month, the National Weather Service is calling for sunny skies, with a high near 90. Tonight will be mostly clear, with a low around 68.

2. Don't forget that today Congressman Phil Gingrey (GA-11) wants to meet with the constituents of the 11th district at a Town Hall meeting from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Ben Robertson Community Center in Adams Park. Gingrey wants to hear feedback on a variety of issues coming out of Washington, D.C. If you can't make it, Kennesaw Patch will have a live blog of the meeting for you to follow.

3. Our neighbors to the north in Acworth are planning a big "Love the Lake" festival on Labor Day weekend on the lake -- yes, summer's not over yet. The festival will be held at on Saturday and Sunday and includes arts and crafts, kids activities and a free concert. Check out details at the Acworth Patch. And, speaking of Labor Day, don't forget for the holiday. On Labor Day (Monday, Sep 5), City Hall will be closed. There will be no trash, recycles or lawn debris pickup - recycles picked up Tuesday, Sep 6. Call 770-421-8582 for more information.

4. Qualifying ended Wednesday for the on Nov. 8. Check back with Kennesaw Patch later today for an update on all who qualified - both incumbents and those new to the government scene. Kennesaw has the mayor’s office and two council seats up in Post 1 and Post 2.

5. Interesting fact: The first Labor Day celebration in the United States can be traced to New York City's Union Square on Sept. 5, 1882. It was designed as a way to appease city workers after numerous strikes and, in some cases, even violence.
