Here are 5 things you need to know in Kennesaw for Sept. 14.

1. Will we hit 90 degrees today? If we do, it will be the 90th day of 90 degrees or above temps this summer. The National Weather Service says it will be sunny with a high near 89. Tonight will be partly cloudy, with a low around 62.

2. Officials of the National Merit Scholarship Corporation have announced the names of approximately 16,000 semifinalists in the 2012 57th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 8,300 National Merit Scholarships. Those named from Kennesaw high schools are:

-Kevin C. Figlewicz; -
Austin L. French, Nicole L. Gilreath, Joshua G. Lee, William O. Morlan; -Tiffany Zhang.

3. It will be a dog’s day in Kennesaw on Saturday. Paws in the Park is a free interactive event hosted by the Environmental Committee at from 9 a.m. to noon, rain or shine. The event is designed to promote good behavior by owners walking their dogs in public areas and to provide educational materials about responsible pet ownership.    

The event will feature service dog demonstrations by the Georgia K9 National Training Center as well as exhibits by local businesses focused on pet feeding, care and obedience and pet adoption.  Free samples of pet foods and products and discount offers for services will be available. A doggie parade will be conducted at 10 am, costumes optional.

4. Did your child ever want to keep a journal or a diary? They can learn how to this Saturday during the Make It & Take It Weekend Workshops at the in Kennesaw. Make It & Take It helps bring history to life and is held every third Saturday of the month from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The program is free with Museum admission. All materials are provided. 5. Interesting fact: More than half of all deaths during the American Civil War were the result of disease (not bullets). The primary culprits included typhoid fever, dysentery, tuberculosis and pneumonia.
