Atlanta Symphony Orchestra to play at Kennesaw State this Friday

The Kennesaw State University School of Music welcomes
the world-renowned Atlanta Symphony Orchestra to Morgan Hall in the Bailey
Performance Center on January 24, 2014. The performance will feature highly acclaimed
pianist Wu Han performing Benjamin Britten’s Piano Concerto, and the epic
orchestral work Symphonie fantastique by Hector Berlioz. Music Director Robert
Spano will conduct the orchestra’s first KSU performance in its 69-year
history.

Although an Atlanta Symphony concert is a new experience
for Kennesaw State, the ASO and the KSU School of Music have long enjoyed a
close relationship. Twelve ASO musicians are on the KSU faculty, and ASO concertmaster
David Coucheron and Robert Spano have performed at the Bailey Center this
season. Last October, Spano visited KSU for a three-day residency, where he
rehearsed the KSU Symphony Orchestra, hosted a question-and-answer session, and
coached students in chamber music performance.

About their upcoming concert, Spano says, “one of the
most exciting things about bringing the Berlioz Symphonie fantastique to Morgan
Hall is how it will sound in here. This is such a beautiful hall but it’s also
quite intimate. To perform such an epic, large-scale work in this space will be
mind-blowing.”

The two organizations will be announcing a formal
partnership in the coming weeks, further solidifying their cooperative
interests in music performance, education, and outreach. David Daly, Director
of Programming and Facilities for the School of Music, says, “We are absolutely
honored to have an orchestra of such prominence perform on our campus. I hope
this is the beginning of a long-standing collaboration with many more exciting
concerts to come.”

The ASO is known for its excellent live performances, presentations,
and renowned choruses, as well as an impressive list of GRAMMY® Award-winning
recordings. During its 32-year history with Telarc records, the ASO Orchestra
and Chorus have recorded more than 100 albums; its recordings have won 27 GRAMMY®
Awards in categories including Best Classical Album, Best Orchestral
Performance, Best Choral Performance, and Best Opera Performance. Performing
more than 200 concerts each year, the Orchestra reaches over a half million people,
including educational and community concerts.
