Kennesaw State to Present 'Road Kill'

Technical virtuosity and artistic beauty combine as more than 45 dancers from the Kennesaw State University Department of Dance bring the classic masterpiece “Swan Lake” along with four new world premieres to the Kennesaw State stage. The energizing performance is scheduled for Nov. 14-17 in the Howard Logan Stillwell Theater at 8 p.m. The concert is titled “Road Kill” after a signature work by Department of Dance Chair Ivan Pulinkala.

A new work by Assistant Professor Sandra Parks investigates the idea of rebuilding movement motifs through the use of contemporary ballet vocabulary. This work will also be presented by the KSU Dance Company at the Regional American College Dance Festival next spring. The department’s newly hired Assistant Professor Stevan Novakovich brings to the stage a powerful new multimedia work based on real-life stories of missing women. The work features a unique blend of text, music, video and movement.

A highlight of the performance will be the collaboration between the KSU Dance Company and the student-artists from the School of Music. The two student groups will collaborate in a new work choreographed by KSU artist-in-residence, Lauri Stallings, with music by noted composer David Lang. This work is being developed in collaboration with gloATLand represents the unique artistic partnership between the KSU Department of Dance and Atlanta’s premiere contemporary dance company.

This performance features the unique collaboration among various departments in the College of the Arts. Three professors from the Department of Theatre & Performance Studies are collaborating with the Department of Dance on this show. Assistant Professor Rebecca Makus will be lighting two of the new works, Associate Professor Harrison Longis collaborating with Novakovich on his new work and Associate Professor Jamie Bullins will be designing the costumes for Pulinkala’s “Road Kill.” The Department of Dance will also introduce the work of noted lighting designer and technical director David Tatu, who joined the department this fall. Tatu has extensive national and international design credits and joins the staff of the Department of Dance following a lengthy tenure with Atlanta Ballet.

The concert will close with Pulinkala’s whimsical world premiere, “Road Kill,” a physically challenging work for ten KSU dancers that makes a social statement on the pace of modern society. Infused with humor and symbolic imagery, dancers cut through the stage space at high speeds using special shoes with wheels.
