Kennesaw Mountain Battlefield Superintendent Receives AAUW Honor

The Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park superintendent is the Cobb chapter's Woman of the Year.

Nancy Walther, Superintendent of the Kennesaw Mountain Battlefield National Park, was honored by the Cobb Branch of the AAUW (American Association of University Women) as its Woman of the Year at a banquet  last week.  

She grew up in northern Virginia in a family that valued nature, was active in Campfire Girls, and earned her degree in in parks, recreation and leisure studies from George Mason University.

In 1992, Walther began her National Park Service at the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park located in Maryland, West Virginia and District of Columbia.

She moved to metro Atlanta in 2002 where she became the chief of resource education at the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area, managing the park's education, interpretation and fee programs. 

Today she is in the midst of planning for the 150th commemoration of the Civil War. The sesquicentennial events at the park will take place in 2014. The park is the only NPS property that commemorates the Atlanta campaign. An average of 1.5 million people visit the park annually.

She and her husband, Dan, live her 16-year-old step-daughter, Jessica, a Wheeler High School student. She also has a 21-year-old stepson, Jacob.
