Aircraft Forced to Make Belly Landing at McCollum

FAA spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said the agency will investigate why the landing gear on the aircraft collapsed.

Update 9:53 p.m.

Authorities are removing the Cessna 177 that was forced to make a belly landing at McCollum Field just before 8 tonight.

FAA spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said the agency will investigate why the landing gear on the aircraft collapsed on Runway 27.

"The aircraft flew over the airport before landing, and controllers in the tower advised the pilot that the gear did not appear to be locked in the down position," she said in an email to Patch. "The controllers work for Robinson Aviation, a private company that the FAA contracts to provide air traffic service at the airport."

Only one person was board the aircraft, Bergen said. No one was injured, said Officer Mike Bowman, the spokesman for the Cobb County Police Department.

The Cessna is registered to the B&L Goldin Family Partnership LP out of Cedar Bluff, Ala., according to online FAA records. It was manufactured in 1976.

The runway at McCollum is closed because the aircraft is disabled on the runway. It "will reopen when the aircraft is moved off the runway," she said.
