Cobb County Police Officer Injured in Hit and Run

The officer sustained broken bones after a suspected drunk driver struck him and fled the scene.

A Cobb County police officer was injured in Kennesaw Thursday night after being struck by a suspected drunk driver.

According to Sgt. Dana Pierce of the Cobb County police, the incident occurred at about 11:20 p.m. as Officer A.M. Singleton made a traffic stop on Cobb Parkway, just south of Greers Chapel Road.

Pierce said the traffic violator pulled over for the officer and stopped partially in the right northbound travel lane, causing Singleton to position his patrol car so that it blocked a portion of that right lane.

As Singleton completed the traffic stop and attempted to get back into the patrol car, the driver of a black 2001 BMW 740i struck both the officer and his patrol car, said Pierce.

The driver of the BMW failed to stop or render aid and fled the area, heading northbound on Cobb Parkway; the first traffic violator did assist the downed officer, said Pierce.

About 20 minutes later, officers at the scene observed a black BMW with right front damage driving southbound on Cobb Parkway. Officers from Cobb County’s DUI Task Force, VIPER and Precinct 1 stopped the vehicle, said Pierce.

Pierce said that after further investigation, 40-year-old Irving Alicea of Marietta was arrested and charged with failure to move over for an emergency vehicle, driving under the influence of alcohol and a felony hit and run.

Alicea was not injured in the crash and was transported to the Cobb County Adult Detention Center. According to arrest records, he was released around 9:30 a.m. today on $30,000 bond.

Singleton sustained multiple broken bones and was transported by ambulance to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital with injuries to his right hand, knee and ankle, said Pierce. At this time, his injuries are not expected to be life-threatening.
