Cobb Man Gets 25 Years in Family Violence Case

Devon Lamar Gilbert was found guilty of beating and assaulting his wife in front of their young children.

Devon Lamar Gilbert, 22, was sentenced Thursday to serve 25 years in prison for assaulting his wife in front of their children in 2012 and last year.

Gilbert was sentenced to an overall total of 40 years by Cobb Superior Court Judge LaTain Kell after being convicted by a jury on two counts of aggravated assault/family violence, five counts of aggravated assault/family violence, and three counts of cruelty to children in the third degree.

Prosecutors said the woman suffered from severe bites, burns, bruises and scars during two documented incidents in July 2012 and May 2013.

According to Cobb Sheriff's Office records, Gilbert was listed as having an address on Akers Ridge Drive near the Cumberland Mall area. He was arrested at an apartment on Barrett Lakes Boulevard near Kennesaw in May 2013.

Gilbert took the stand in his own defense during the trial, at which he admitted to some of the acts, according to a statement from the Cobb District Attorney's office.

He had been held without bond in the Cobb County Adult Detention Center since his arrest.
