Former GSU Soccer Player From Kennesaw Shot and Killed

Southeast Atlanta shooting results in a second former Panther men's soccer player being killed this summer in the city.

Atlanta police say they found the vehicle believed to be involved in an accident that resulted in the shooting death Sunday of a former Georgia State University soccer player.

Ayokunle Lumpkin of Kennesaw was shot during a confrontation on Milton Avenue in Chosewood Park.

The incident occurred after Lumpkin followed a vehicle that had hit his girlfriend’s car during an incident the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

The shooting occurred at approximately 1:44 a.m. with Lumpkin suffering a gunshot wound to the chest. The 23-year-old was transported to Grady Hospital and later was pronounced dead.

Witnesses were able to provide a vehicle description to the police, who searched for a green vehicle that sped away from the shooting scene.

Lumpkin was reportedly still attending GSU, where in four seasons he scored 10 goals and three assists in 70 career matches for the Panthers.

The former Sprayberry High School standout is the second former GSU men's soccer player killed this summer. In June, 21-year-old Timothy Nixon died during a one-car accident in downtown when he lost control of his car and hit an ice cream store.
