Tip a Cop for Special Olympics

The Kennesaw Police Department will be raising awareness and funds for the Special Olympics by waiting on customers at Joe's Crab Shack Thursday.

The is encouraging residents to dine at on Thursday, Oct. 20—and to leave a hefty tip for the waiter.

Officers will be serving up steampots of seafood all day at the Kennesaw restaurant in an effort to raise funds for Special Olympics Georgia, an organization that provides sports training and competition to more than 23,000 special needs kids and adults.

“Come out and support the police department, Joe’s Crab Shack and most definitely the Special Olympics," said Kennesaw Police Officer Scott Luther.

Luther recently in the Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run leading up to the 2011 Special Olympics Summer Games in Athens, Greece.

“It was incredible. It was something that I’ll probably never get to experience again, especially on that level," said Luther of the torch run, which took him through 62 cities—including stops in Cyprus, Turkey, Egypt and Greece.

Luther said he may not possess professional serving skills, but the event is for a good cause. It's also a great opportunity for patrons to "crack jokes" on the officers, he said.

All tips collected Thursday will be donated to the Georgia Special Olympics. A portion of the bill will also be donated with the presentation of a flyer, which can be downloaded here. The flyer is also attached to this article as a PDF.
