Prognosis Not Good for Former KSU Student Injured in Athens Hit-and-Run

As authorities investigate a hit-and-run that critically injured a former Kennesaw State University student, the mother of the 19-year-old victim said just before noon today that her daughter continues to have bleeding and swelling around her brain.

Just after 3 a.m. Saturday morning, Emily Bowman of Woodstock was walking in the grass when a 1997 red Mazda pick up truck traveling eastbound on Oak Street left the roadway, hit her, then fled the scene, according to an accident report and a media release from the Athens Clarke County Police Department.

Witnesses at the scene provided a description of the truck, which police located a short time later.

Bowman, who was in Athens for a friend's birthday, was taken to Athens Regional Medical Center with serious head trauma and injuries described as life-threatening, according to the accident report.

"We just got word from the doctor a little bit ago that there's no improvement in her," Debra Bowman said in a brief phone conversation with Kennesaw Patch. "They're doing another CAT scan. It's pretty much hour by hour right now."

Bowman attended Kennesaw State University during her freshman year, then transferred to a school in Mississippi, her mother said.

"But then at the holidays, she decided she wanted to come back to Kennesaw," Debra Bowman said.
