Last week, Acworth Alderman Bob Weatherford announced his intentions to run for the District 1 commission seat being vacated by retiring northwest Cobb Commissioner Helen Goreham.

That unofficially makes it five candidates now in the running in the May 20 Republican primary.

Others who have tossed their hat in the ring include realtor Angela Barner, former county Chairman Bill Byrne, insurance agent Glenn Melson, and retired Marietta Assistant Fire Chief Scott Tucker.

Weatherford, 65, served on the Acworth Board of Alderman for a dozen years.

He was a reserve police officer for 20-plus years and also served in the Acworth Police Department for eight years prior to serving as an Acworth Alderman.

A special election will take place to fill the non-partisan, at-large Post 3 seat in May.
