Bids, Recognitions Highlight City Council Meeting

Kennesaw Police Officer Scott Luther was recognized for his participation in the Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run in Greece.

Monday night’s Kennesaw City Council meeting was a speedy affair, concluding less than 20 minutes after Mayor Mark Mathews called the assembly to order.

It was announced that G&K Services of Cartersville, Ga. has placed a bid to provide uniform rental and laundry services to the City of Kennesaw. Several representatives, including the Assistant City Manager, Building Services Director, Parks Director and Public Works Director have met with G&K Services representatives to discuss the proposed bid.

A review committee recommended awarding G&K Services the bid, for an amount not too exceed the 2012 fiscal year uniform budgets for each City of Kennesaw department. G&K Services currently has contracts with Paulding County, the City of Roswell, the Cobb County School District and Atlanta’s Department of Aviation.

During the meeting, Mathews presented Atlanta Young Marine Avery Ravech with a proclamation that designated the week of Oct. 23-31, 2011 as “Red Ribbon Week” in Kennesaw. Mathews also declared Oct. 24, 2011 “Diaper Day” in Kennesaw. The proclamation was spurred by the efforts of the Cobb Diaper Day Committee, who are attempting to collect diapers for parents adversely affected by ongoing economic conditions. Several Cobb Diaper Day Committee volunteers will be collecting donations on Oct. 24 at Glover Park in Marietta Square, beginning at 5 p.m.

Officer Scott Luther was also recognized at the meeting. Luther was selected by the Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run Executive Committee to , culminating with the opening ceremony of the Special Olympics World Summer Games, which were held earlier this year in Athens, Greece.

Luther was one of only 145 people chosen worldwide to represent the international team. Earlier this year, Luther helped carry the torch through more than 60 cities, including stops in Cyprus, Turkey, Egypt and Greece, where he also presented several speeches.

Luther said the final leg of the torch run was a “life-changing experience.”

“I will never probably get a chance to go back to Greece, much less visit the 62 cities that I went through,” he said. “The three weeks I was there, I got to run 110 miles, and to be honest with you, I do feel a whole lot better than when I did before I left.”

“It’s an extreme pleasure doing what I do,” Luther said after receiving an award placard from the mayor. “I don’t do it for this, I do it to give back to the community.”
