City Council Passes 9-1-1 Tax

The has ratified the results of the , and they were passed as part of the consent agenda. The entire agenda was passed as a whole with a unanimous vote of 5-0. The council held its meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Monday night. It lasted for a half-hour and saw an attendance of about 20 persons.

The council also approved a 9-1-1 tax to be charged on prepaid wireless service. The charge will be imposed at the retail point of sale. The fee will be 75 cents per sale. In response to a question about whether Kennesaw was the only city to impose such a tax, explained that it is the result of a bill that was passed by the Georgia State Legislature.

The passage of the bill made the implementation of said tax available to cities in Georgia. "We could have imposed it a while back," Mathews said. "But we just held off on it for a little while."

The council also voted to grant a sum in the amount of $66,575.80 to the . The funds will be used to purchase two 2011 Crown Victoria police cars for the department.

In other news, the council approved of the renewal of two liquor licenses. Both companies in question had been cited for one incident of serving to a minor. According to the agenda items, both companies paid the appropriate fines and have had no further incidents.

On the subject of alcohol sales, the council also mentioned the recently passed . The referendum allows for the sale of alcohol on Sundays in the city and was approved by the voters with a 73 percent majority. Mayor Mathews says that the city is planning two public hearings for the referendum before it becomes law. It is set to go into effect January 1.
