Cobb County, WellStar Work Together to Keep Seniors Healthy

Cobb Chairman Tim Lee and president and CEO of WellStar, Reynold Jennings, have signed an agreement to establish a senior community clinic.

The clinic, currently under construction at 1150 Powder Springs St., Marietta, is scheduled to open in late August and will provide free, preventive and chronic healthcare services for eligible, low-income seniors who are uninsured Cobb residents between the ages 55 and 64.

"We think this center is a big step forward, not just for seniors, but for the entire community," Chairman Lee said in a press release. "It will help save taxpayers money, provide additional services and give the surrounding business community an economic boost."

The clinic will also concentrate on services that are not eligible for Medicaid or Medicare, such as vision and hearing screenings.

Most of the funding for the construction of the wellness center is provided by federal funds. Renovations of the building, which qualify for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification, were also partially-funded through the 2011 Special Purpose Local Option Sales.
