Kennesaw Voters Hit the Polls

Today is Super Tuesday, and here's what voters need to know before heading out to the polls.

Kennesaw residents have been trickling in at the polls since 7 a.m.

"It's been just spotty all day long," said poll manager Mike Fredenburg.

As of 5 p.m., 239 out of 1700-plus registered voters at the precinct had voted, Fredenburg said. "Ten or 15 will come in, then an hour will go by and 10 or 15 more will come in," he said.

Gail Straub, poll manager at , said about 130 people of "not quite 1500" registered voters at the precinct had voted as of 5 p.m. Straub, who worked the same precinct four years ago, said that while turnout seemed less than in 2004, she attributed the difference to early voting.

Kennesaw resident Greg Potthast, 27, voted at the center shortly after 5 p.m. "We live in a country we have the freedom to vote, and we need to express that right," Potthast said. He said he wasn't comfortable sharing who he voted for but that financial and social issues were the most important factors in choosing a candidate.

Kennesaw residents are hitting the polls with voting in the Georgia primary underway since 7 a.m.

For Kennesaw voters, the primary is the only item on the ballot. But residents outside the city limits in unincorporated Cobb County will also decide whether or not to a measure which .

Jeanette Lyons said she was number 23 in line when she voted at her precinct at around 7:30 this morning.

"I voted for Gingrich. I believe his has the best business sense and can bring that to the White house. I also believe that Herman Cain as his running mate would make an unbeatable team. Would have voted for Herman, but he withdrew," Lyons said.

"Yes, after being 'jilted by Herman Cain' I have had a hard time committing to another candidate," responded Andrea Debranski. "If someone doesn't step up to the plate and start talking about real tax reform and real spending cuts, we are going to be doomed to failure no matter who wins in November. I fear that the Republican candidates left in the race, only plan to slow down the death spiral America is in."

Here's how the presidential candidates have spent the past week campaigning in Georgia, which has 76 delegates at stake today.

  • Tuesday in Arizona and Michigan to Smokejack's in downtown Alpharetta on Thursday.
  • Thursday before flying out to Washington state to campaign there.
  • A last Sunday.
  • at a Cobb Chamber of Commerce breakfast on Thursday.

During early voting in Cobb County, 11,205 people voted in the Republican primary, 883 voted in the Democratic primary and 91 cast nonpartisan votes. For absentee votes, as of Friday, 2,886 people had cast Republican ballots, 253 had cast Democratic ballots and 18 had cast nonpartisan ballots.

That makes the total number of early voters 15,336 as of Friday, March 2.

On election day in presidential primaries, there is usually a voter turnout in the low 30 percent range, said Janine Eveler, director of Cobb County Elections.
