If Chambliss Isn't Running for Reelection, Who Should Be Georgia's Next Senator?

Would John Lewis, who represents Atlanta and Midtown, be a good candidate for Senate? What if former Democratic Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney tossed her hat into the ring or former representative and presidential candidate Newt Gingrich?

Citing an issue he covered with a metro Atlanta rotary club last year, U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss announced Friday that he is not seeking re-election in 2014.

“This is about frustration, both at a lack of leadership from the White House and at the dearth of meaningful action from Congress, especially on issues that are the foundation of our nation’s economic health," Chambliss said in a statement. "The debt-ceiling debacle of 2011 and the recent fiscal-cliff vote showed Congress at its worst and, sadly, I don’t see the legislative gridlock and partisan posturing improving anytime soon.

"For our nation to be strong, for our country to prosper, we cannot continue to play politics with the American economy."

In a speech before the Brookhaven Rotary in January 2012, Chambliss said, "Our number one security interest in America is not al-Qaeda. It’s our debt.' We’re looking at a reduction in defense spending like you’ve never seen. We can see another 600 million in defence reduction over the next 10 years. If that happens, I can tell you it will be a hallow military representating the United states of America."

Chambliss said he was confident he would have won re-election had he decided to seek another term.

Patch wants to know: who should run for Chambliss' seat? What about U.S. Rep. John Lewis, who represents the heart of Atlanta and Midtown in his 5th Congressional District? Or David Scott from the 13th Congressional District?

On the Republican side, the name of former state representative and 2012 presidential candidate Newt Gingrinch immediately surfaced Friday, but his camp quickly squashed the notion. So did fellow 2012 presidential candidate Herman Cain, who said he's focusing on his new WSB radio show.

I've said it and I'll say it again - Saxby Chambliss shot himself in the foot when he said, last year, "Our number one security interest in America is not al-Qaeda. It’s our debt", I wanted him to say that to the family of the people who died on 9/11. How, every September 11, we hold our breath, waiting for something else to happen. Sure, our debt is a problem, but I would rather be broke and alive than rich and dead.

Saxby Chambliss is a waste of a intelligent person's time to have in office!

Any Democrat who is drunk or on dope can do a better job than Chambliss!
