In metro Atlanta, the jobless rate also rose, hitting 10.5 percent from a revised 9.7 percent in May and 10.3 percent in June 2010.

“The increase was caused primarily by two seasonal factors,” Labor Commissioner Mark Butler said in a statement. “There were layoffs among non-contract public school employees, such as bus drivers and janitorial workers, and an increase in the labor force, as students began looking for permanent or part-time jobs.”

The labor department cited a loss of 4,600 jobs in Atlanta, with additional layoffs in manufacturing, trade, administrative and support services, and health care and social assistance.

Georgia’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate posted at 9.9 percent in June, marking the 47th consecutive month the state has exceeded the national unemployment rate, which is currently at 9.2 percent.
