Leonard Church: I'll Take 12 Percent Pay Cut Until Economy Improves

Mayoral challenger Leonard Church answers a few questions about his campaign and plans for the city if he is elected.

1. Would you mind telling us about your background?

I grew up in Cobb County, attending the old Sprayberry High School and Emory school of Dental Technology. I have two daughters and three grandchildren, and I am engaged.  I have called Kennesaw home for the past 16 years.

2. What did you do between finishing school and entering politics?

I still do own and Operate Church Dental Prosthetics.

3. Most understand that this is a non-partisan election. Still, we would like to know what your political affiliation is, if you don't mind.

Republican.

4. Which issue do you believe is the most important facing Kennesaw right now?

At the present time, our citizens are greatly concerned over the TSPLOST tax proposal to fund a light rail system that would not benefit Kennesaw. The men and women of this city do not want any tax burdens that would require a 10-year pay off.

5. What will you bring to the table that you feel Mark Mathews does not?

If elected I will focus on three main areas. Building the downtown area, working out a plan to stop any non-emergency unplanned, unbudgeted spending and rebuilding the trust with our city employees, citizens and business owners.

6. Would you mind describing in a bit more detail why you want to take a 12 percent pay cut at the beginning of your term, should you win?

This mayor and council is cutting all departments but their own. True leadership has to start at the top and I am willing to take a cut as our employees have.

7. The incumbent council is often credited with the lack of layoffs as a sign of its performance. Many have suggested that it's a miracle in of itself, and that growth is something of a dream until the nation's economy as a whole turns around. Do you feel that Kennesaw would be able to grow under your leadership, even under the current economic climate?

If this is true why have all part time employees been let go from the museum? Look at (Thursday's) paper (MDJ). Why is Acworth growing so much and Kennesaw is not? Because of the leadership.

8. Your campaign slogan is "Integrity and Common Sense for Kennesaw." This seems to suggest a perceived lack of such from the incumbent mayor. Do you feel this way, and if so, why do you?

You said that, not me.

9. Since we are on the record, is there anything you would like to say to the citizens of Kennesaw (words of wisdom, campaign promise, etc.)?

I believe we have to be accountable for the spending. If elected, I will have all mayor and council spending posted on the website with details so that there is no question about who is spending the city’s money. I will also take a 12 percent pay cut until the economy improves. I am in this with our employees and the citizens of Kennesaw.  I believe in this city and I know that together we can make a difference. I am asking for your vote on Nov. 8.
