Cobb Juniors Earn Excellent Marks on Writing Test

Although test scores were down slightly on average, Cobb County's 11th graders maintained a high pass rate while the rest of the state saw losses.

Cobb County School District 11th graders who took the Georgia High School Writing Test this year maintained their predecessor's reputation for high achievement despite declining pass rates on the state level.

In 2013, 99 percent of "regular education" Cobb test takers met or exceeded the standards, compared to a 96 percent meet or exceed rate across Georgia, according to a memo issued by the Cobb Board of Education.

Cobb's special education students earned an 85 percent meet or exceed rate, compared to 70 percent of Georgia's special education students.

English language learners met or exceeded the standard at an 81 percent clip in 2013, compared to the 60 percent rate earned by their peers across the state.

The average score earned by regular education Cobb students was 231; the average score earned by special education students was 215, and the English language learners scored 208 on average. The score averages were down a point or two from their 2012 levels.
