Lady Owls on Right Track

Athens Christian High School's Destiny Jenkins signed a letter of intent Wednesday to run track and cross country at Kennesaw State University.

women's track and field team is gaining speed with a first-place performance in the 4x400 meter relay in Illinois, a win and program record in the 800-meter event in Birmingham and concerted efforts to recruit new talent.

Destiny Jenkins, a senior and star runner at Athens Christian High School, signed a letter of intent Wednesday to run track and cross country for the Lady Owls, reported the Athens-Banner Herald.

Jenkins won the state Class A titles in the 800-meter and 1600-meter events and was on the winning 1600-meter relay team last spring, reported the Banner Herald. She joins her brother, Joshua, who signed to compete at Kennesaw State on the same day a year ago.

Jenkins was part of the Athens Christian track team that won two consecutive state titles. Individually, she came close to setting state records in the 800-meter and the mile.

“Kennesaw State is getting a girl that they’re not going to have to train how to work,” said Athens coach Tim Cummings. “She’s already there. They’re getting a leader and someone who does a great job of getting along and taking care of her teammates. They’re getting somebody who’s fun to have on the team."
