KSU to Host Suburban Conference

The daylong conference will take place Friday, April 13, at Kennesaw State.

will host the 10th annual Suburban Conference next week in an open community discussion about social solutions to social problems.

The daylong conference will take place Friday, April 13, and include presentations, discussions, brainstorming sessions and research addressing crime, health care, drug courts, race and culture, HIV/AIDS and social services, with a particular focus on the impact on suburban communities.

The day's keynote speaker will be Sam Tsemberis, founder of the New York-based Pathways to Housing initiative and creator of the “Housing First” model, which emphasizes the importance of first providing housing to homeless individuals, followed by supportive treatment like mental and physical health care, substance abuse counseling, education and employment.

The model has been replicated in 40 cities across the country, as well as in Canada, Japan, the Netherlands, Spain and Portugal.

Special guest Hermann Handlhuber will provide an international perspective on how Housing First has been applied. Handlhuber, who was formerly homeless, now serves as Coordinator of Mediators at Médecins du Mondes in Marseilles, France.
