Maximizing Your Weekend Potential

Get more done on weekends and still have fun!

It never fails. Every Sunday night around 7 or 8 p.m., I ask myself where the weekend went. Then I usually think to myself, if I were the President of the United States, I would make every weekend a three-day weekend. Frankly, two days never seem to be enough. Monday morning always seems to come no matter how much I fight it, and because none of the potential 2012 presidential candidates has shortening the work week on their agendas, I have had to come up with ways to make the most out of my weekend.

Don’t save everything for the weekend. This is also called procrastinating. That is my go-to excuse when I don’t want to stay up that extra hour or two during the week. The problem is those things add up to a pile of things on your precious weekend time.

I wake up early on Saturday or Sunday. If I don’t have anywhere to be, I will relish in that fact and I won’t set an alarm. I still wake up fairly early though. I have never understood people who sleep in past noon on the weekends. You have just slept half of your day away! Admittedly, I do end up taking a midday nap, but at least I wake up and got something accomplished, whether that be working out or doing laundry.

I also look at my planner before Sunday night. Sometimes I just want to walk out of that last class on Friday afternoon and not look back. The problem is, I always have to. It is a lot more overwhelming to think of all the things you have to do when there are only several hours left before another busy week starts. In reality, you probably could have checked several things off that list earlier in the weekend.

Make a to-do list. Write down the things you need to get done and put the most important things on top. Also list a tentative time to get them done.

Know your schedule and social obligations. If you’re going out for a friend’s birthday on Saturday, resolve to get a few things done beforehand because you know you won’t have time after. There will also be weekends when you do not have anything planned or plans may be “up in the air.” Try to get things done while you’re waiting for things to develop.

Leave time for relaxation. That’s what the weekend is for, right? If you don’t do that, you have failed.
