Ripples Could Hit Warriors, Mustangs

The GHSA's reclassification keeps North Cobb, Kennesaw Mountain and Harrison at the top level but might force a change in regions.

The Georgia High School Association unveiled its six-class replacement for the current five-class system this week, and Kennesaw’s schools won’t see any major changes—with one possible exception.

, and will still be in the top classification, which will add an A and become AAAAAA.

The GHSA revealed the proposed classifications for the next two years Monday for all of its member schools based on their enrollments this year in Grades 9 to 11.

All schools have until Dec. 5 to ask to move into a higher classification, usually for geographic convenience. The GHSA will reveal the proposed regions for each class Dec. 6.

That day could have North Cobb and Kennesaw Mountain students and fans on the edge of their seats.

Because is moving from AAAA to join the 65-school AAAAAA level and most likely will wind up in a region with the teams now in Region 4-AAAAA, the GHSA could move one of the eight 4-AAAAA schools in Cobb County into a region with the seven schools now in Region 5-AAAAA.

If that happens, the geographically logical candidates would be North Cobb and Kennesaw Mountain. So one of those schools might end up driving east for games against , and instead of south to play Harrison, and .

Meanwhile, North Cobb Christian and Mount Paran Christian might not notice any changes.

Both schools are members of Region 6-A now, and nine of the 12 schools—Bowdon, Bremen and Morris Innovative being the exceptions—are staying in Class A and could form the bulk of a region in the new setup.

The attached PDF file shows all six classifications, including each school’s current or projected enrollment of ninth- to 11th-graders. There are 65 schools in AAAAAA, 71 each in AAAAA and AAAA, 70 in AAA, 66 in AA and 97 in A, although only 71 of the A schools play football.
