U.S. News: Kennesaw Mountain High a Top School

One metro Atlanta school is near the top of the 2013 list.

U.S. News & World Report released its list of top public high schools Tuesday, and Kennesaw Mountain High School earned a national ranking.

Of the 2,290 nationally-ranked schools, KMHS came in at No. 1,358.

One metro Atlanta school was near the top of the list.  in Lawrenceville was the third best high school in the country, according to U.S. News & World Report. That was the highest national ranking of any school in the state of Georgia.

The magazine examined how well students at more than 21,000 schools performed on state assessments, comparing them with other schools in the same state based on demographic factors. Within Georgia, Allatoona is the 41st best high school, according to U.S. News & World Report.

Eligible schools were then considered for national medalist designations based on student success in Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate programs. The AP participation rate at Allatoona High is 27 percent, U.S. News & World Report found.

Nine Cobb high schools earned a national ranking. They included:

  • Lassiter High, No. 343
  • Wheeler High, No. 906
  • Sprayberry High, No. 1,343
  • Kennesaw Mountain High, No. 1,358
  • Hillgrove High, No. 1,491
  • Campbell High, No. 1,639
  • R.L. Osborne High, No. 1,835
  • McEachern High, No. 1,876
  • Allatoona High, No. 2,061

Marietta High, which is not part of the Cobb County School District, was ranked No. 1,463.
