NCCS Gives Away a Close One

North Cobb Christian led late in the fourth quarter but lost 26-21 to Cross Keys.

Once again, defense and penalties proved to be the undoing of as the Eagles lost a late lead and the game to the Cross Keys Indians from Brookhaven by a score of 26-21 at their home field in Kennesaw.

NCCS was missing their senior star playerβ€”β€”who was sidelined last week with a concussion and will miss a total of two games.

"It will be two weeks before I can play," said Harris from the sidelines. "I just got back from an appointment with a concussion doctor, and I'm still having headaches." He said no other symptoms are present, and they are keeping a close watch on his recovery.

Two other seniors stepped up in Harris' absence: No. 22 Daniel Galanos and No. 25 Rod Mitchell. Galanos had several long runs in key possessions and scored a touchdown with 10:07 left in the third quarter to put the Eagles ahead 14-6.

Rod Mitchell intercepted a pass in the third quarter and had several key receptions in long possessions that were snuffed out by holding penalties. He scored a touchdown with 9:13 in the second quarter.

Unfortunately, Mitchell missed a catch late in the game that would have enabled NCCS to hold onto the ball and run out the clock. Instead, the Indians got the ball and took it in to score with 3:50 left in the final quarter.

Defensively, the Eagles struggled again but looked better this week behind the tackling of sophomore Oscar Lares and junior linebacker Caleb Keitt. Cross Keys' quarterback had his own problems moving his team down the field.

NCCS falls to 1-3 and travels to St. Francis next Friday.
