NCCS Wins by Big 42-6 Score

Both the North Cobb Christian Eagles and their opponent from Carrollton battled 97-degree heat in the late-afternoon home opener in Kennesaw.

The toughest opponent for football home opener today was the 97-degree heat.

With the game scheduled for 5 p.m. against Mount Zion High School from Carrollton, both Eagle teams baked under the late-afternoon sun. The NCCS Eagles won big, taking the game 42-6.

North Cobb Christian had plenty of offense during the first half, thanks to senior Corey Harris (No. 2), who plays both wide receiver and running back. Harris was instrumental in last year's season and picked up where he left off today.

"This year we came in with more intensity," said Harris, who scored several touchdowns during the game. "Coach Miles and I had a meeting before the season started and discussed what had to be done for the team to be successful."

Asked if success means more this year because he's a senior, Harris smiled and said, "Yeah - I want to go out big."

The 28-man NCCS squad ended the first quarter leading 7-0 and Harris scored with 11:53 to go in the second quarter to make it 14-0. By halftime, the Eagles from North Cobb Christian led 29-0 after making a successful two-point conversion. Kicker Andrew Nuckolls (No. 80), a junior, converted all his extra points.

Senior Caleb Keitt (No. 9) contributed both as a linebacker and wide receiver, tackling Mount Zion running backs and taking the ball down the field himself as a receiver. But the big story tonight was North Cobb's defense, which held Mount Zion to a single touchdown and looked as if it has improved tremendously from last season's 2-8 record.

"Our offensive line had a lot more unity," said NCCS head coach Harry Miles in explaining what's different from last year. "Our defense has definitely improved, and coach Jason Roquemore has had a lot to do with that." Jason Roquemore is in his first year as North Cobb's defensive coordinator.

NCCS travels just down the road next Friday to play another Eagles team——at 7:30 p.m.
