North Cobb Takes Down Rival Hoyas

The girls and boys basketball teams took on Harrison in this cross-town rivalry.

The boys and girls basketball teams from traveled to Tuesday, and both teams came away with victories.  The fourth-ranked Lady Warriors came away with a dominating 76-26 victory while the boys won in closer fashion, 59-51.

Led by a 14-0 run, the Lady Warriors came out flying and proved why they are one of the highest ranked teams in the state. They started the game and continued with a full-court press which generated turnovers leading to countless fast-break opportunities. At the end of the first quarter, North Cobb led by the intimidating score of 30-6.

The Warrior backcourt of Jarae Savage and Taylor Gordon combined for 25 (14 and 11 respectively) first half points while forwards Kira Gordon and Amber Reeves added 27 (14 and 13) of their own as North Cobb took a 54-14 lead into the locker room.

North Cobb’s girls looked like a team that could contend for the state title.

The boys’ game had a completely different feel to it; there were multiple lead changes, physical defense, and even a little controversy.

In what was truly a tale of two halves, Harrison started on a 10-2 run. However, the Warriors stayed close with a three-pointer by Armani Jackson. The first quarter ended 15-10.

North Cobb chipped away at the Hoya lead in the second. Senior guard Jalen Clark provided some spectacular plays driving the lane to keep his team’s deficit within four entering the second half.

The story of the second half would be fouls. The Warriors attempted 41 free throws in the second half alone; Harrison only took seven. Throughout the course of the game, North Cobb went an astonishing 30-51 at the line. They scored 58 percent of their points on foul shots.

Although there were some questionable calls, North Cobb earned a lot of foul shots by driving the lane with their guards and solid post play by center Jordan Nuff.

“We gave them lots of second-chance opportunities (in the first half),” said North Cobb coach Terry Gorsuch. “Any time you get to the free-throw line that’s great. We play an inside attack style. When you go inside, you usually get fouled more.”

After the game, Harrison head coach Robert Churchwell was outraged.

“Please write about it. I don’t want to have to say it. Please write about the fouls and how the game went.”

Churchwell wasn't finished.

“This is ridiculous. These are kids. Not grown men, kids. We had three guys foul out and they only had one guy with three fouls. You saw how it went. Write about it.”

North Cobb’s Clark and forward Eddie Cengic each finished with a game high 14 points while Harrison’s Guilmete finished with 14 as well.
