Whiz Kids: Girls Soccer Team Travels to Italy

The girls North Atlanta Soccer Association team heads abroad to train.

For most soccer players, training includes playing on a team, lots of practice and possibly attending camps for further player development. This team of North Atlanta Soccer Association (NASA) soccer players took the sport a step further when they traveled to Italy over Spring Break to hone their skills.

Coach Paul Richards first introduced the opportunity to his two NASA select teams–one a U-19 and the other a U-17–last fall. Richards knew many of his players would be unable to go due to the sizable time and monetary commitment, but his goal was to have enough players from each team to field a complete team. Ultimately, that goal was achieved when 16 players committed to travel abroad for the soccer experience.

The opportunity was made possible largely by the efforts of Gavino  Asteghene, an Alpharetta resident. Asteghene, born and raised in Italy, played soccer professionally as a young man. Several years ago, Asteghene began organizing team trips via his liaisons with Italian trainers, who work with professional players. While visiting, the girls had the opportunity to practice with professional trainers, and also played games against other teams.
